TIMELINE

The Drift is a winter race in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, the largest mountain range in the state. Racers may ski, bike, or run on the snow-covered groomed trail. For 2021, there will be a 13-mile half-marathon, a 28-mile marathon, and a 100-mile ultramarathon (the highest-elevation winter ultramarathon in the United States). This recreation event is authorized under a Special Use Permit with the Bridger-Teton National Forestand the Shoshone National Forest.

2020’s races will be held on March 12-14. The 100-mile race begins on Friday March 12, while the 13- and 28-mile races begin on Sunday, March 14. Visit the race pages to learn more about pre-race meetings and to see the schedules.¬†Pinedale has a whole host of family-friendly ways to while away the weekend, so be sure to see what we have to offer!

Travel/Lodging

Pinedale, Wyoming is the closest town to the race course(s), around 25 miles away. Pinedale is 78 miles south of Jackson and 100 miles north of Rock Springs, where the closest airports are also located. Racers may choose to fly into Salt Lake City (4 hours away) or Idaho Falls (3 hours away) for more reasonable rates.

IMPORTANT! There are a lot of other things going on the week and weekend of this race series, so we recommend racers make their hotel reservations sooner rather than later, to guarantee having a place to crash. ¬†Last year, many racers had difficulties getting a room, so don’t wait. Kendall Valley Lodge is the closest lodging, located just 1/4 mile away from the race’s start/finish lines, but has limited rooms available. Click here for more lodging options.

Not big on winter? Grab your friends and check out our sister race, the Surly Pika! Both races are part of the annual Wind River Mountain Festival. Should you see anyone from the USFS, please shake their hand and tell them “Thank you!” for their continued support for our local race series.
